High-Definition Television (HDTV) provides a higher quality image than does standard television because HDTV's provide a greater number of lines of resolution. Because an HDTV signal is a digital signal, it produces neither a snowy nor a pale image from a weak signal or signal interference effects, such as herringbone patterns, or vertical rolling. Image colors are more vivid and realistic due to the greater bandwidth. The visual information on an HDTV set is some 2-5 times sharper than the same image on a traditional televison since the gaps between the scan lines are narrower or invisible to the naked eye. Television content photographed and preserved on 35 mm film can be viewed at nearly its original resolution.

The term usually assumes a widescreen aspect ratio of 16:9, implying a horizontal resolution of 1920 pixels. This creates a frame resolution of 1920×1080, or 2,073,600 pixels in total. The frame rate in Hertz can be either implied by the context or specified after the letter p, such as 1080p30, meaning 30 Hz. 1080p is sometimes referred to in marketing materials as "Full High-Definition".
